PackageDescriptionXZ-format compression utilities XZ is the successor to the Lempel-Ziv/Markov-chain Algorithm compression format, which provides memory-hungry but powerful compression (often better than bzip2) and fast, easy decompression. . This package provides the command line tools for working with XZ compression, including xz, unxz, xzcat, xzgrep, and so on. They can also handle the older LZMA format, and if invoked via appropriate symlinks will emulate the behavior of the commands in the lzma package. . The XZ format is similar to the older LZMA format but includes some improvements for general use: . * 'file' magic for detecting XZ files; * crc64 data integrity check; * limited random-access reading support; * improved support for multithreading (not used in xz-utils); * support for flushing the encoder.

PackageDescriptionXZ Utils are an attempt to make LZMA compression easy to use on free (as in freedom) operating systems. This is achieved by providing tools and libraries which are similar to use than the equivalents of the most popular existing compression algorithms. LZMA is a general purpose compression algorithm designed by Igor Pavlov as part of 7-Zip. It provides high compression ratio while keeping the decompression speed fast.

PackageDescriptionLZMA provides very high compression ratio and fast decompression. The core of the LZMA utils is Igor Pavlov's LZMA SDK containing the actual LZMA encoder/decoder. LZMA utils add a few scripts which provide gzip-like command line interface and a couple of other LZMA related tools. Also provides: - Average compression ratio 30% better than that of gzip and 15% better than that of bzip2. - Decompression speed is only little slower than that of gzip, being two to five times faster than bzip2. - In fast mode, compresses faster than bzip2 with a comparable compression ratio. - Achieving the best compression ratios takes four to even twelve times longer than with bzip2. However. this doesn't affect decompressing speed. - Very similar command line interface than what gzip and bzip2 have.
